Elyse’s Country Journal – Thursday, January 23, 2014 – Salisbury, CT

Salisbury and the surrounding communities of northwestern Connecticut offer a wide range of unparalleled opportunities. Please enjoy Elyse’s Country Journal, published weekly on Wednesday. Elyse’s hope is that it will help open up a new perspective of our area.

  • On January 24 at 7 PM, The Hotchkiss Concert Series is pleased to welcome back acclaimed pianists John and Mina Perry to perform an exciting program of works by Poulenc, Schubert, Chopin, Debussy and Beethoven. The concert will take place in the Katherine M. Elfers Hall, Esther Eastman Music Center. Admission is free.
  • On Sunday, January 26, at 11:30 AM, The Moviehouse in Millerton in collaboration with The Salisbury Forum and FilmWorks Forum, presents Girl Rising a documentary film about the importance of education for girls born into unforgiving circumstances. A discussion with Senior Producer of Girl Rising, Kayce Freede Jennings, will follow. Admission is free.
  • Faster! Higher! Farther! A Salisbury Winter Sports Association Invitational Photographers Exhibit will start with an Opening Reception on Saturday, February 1, from 4 to 6 PM at the Salisbury Academy Building on Main Street in Salisbury. (Beyond the Opening Reception, the Academy Building is open 9 AM to 1 PM Monday through Friday.) The photographs, taken by local volunteers, will feature events like “building the new ski jump structure” to “sailing over Junior Olympic crowds below” and everything in between.
  • The Salisbury Recreation Commission will offer ice skating to the public on the following Saturdays at The Hotchkiss School Dwyer Rink from 11 AM to 12:30 PM on January 25 and February 1, 8, and 15. The cost is $3 per skater. All participants must bring their own skates. Skates must be worn by anyone on the ice. It is recommended that all participants wear protective equipment including, but not limited to, helmets, gloves and elbow pads. Hockey sticks and pucks are not permitted on the ice. Cancellations due to weather will be pasted on the town website, www.salisburyct.us.
  • The Salisbury School on Canaan Road will also open its rink to the public, from 4 to 5:30 PM on January 26, February 2, 9, and 16. During these hours there are no hockey sticks. All skaters must wear a helmet or hat. Times are subject to change.
  • The Hunt Library in Falls Village opens an exhibition of new oil paintings, “Fleurs Encore,” by Lilly Woodworth on January 25 from 4 to 6 PM. Wine and hors d’oeuvre will be served. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on display through Saturday, February 15.
