Elyse’s Country Journal – October 3, 2013 – HarneyRE – Salisbury, CT

Salisbury and the surrounding communities of northwestern Connecticut offer a wide range of unparalleled opportunities. Please enjoy Elyse’s Country Journal, published weekly on Wednesday. Elyse’s hope is that it will help open up a new perspective of our area.

  • Don’t forget to visit Ellsworth Hill Orchard & Berry Farm on Route 4, about 5 miles down from the village of Sharon. Pick your own fruit, including all varieties of apples, pumpkins, Japanese peaches, Asian pears. Visit the retail store for more delicacies, including pies, pumpkin cheese muffins etc. There will be bluegrass music outside the store over Columbus Day weekend, a corn maze, hayrides, and much more.
  • Deann Halper plays all eight characters in an Aglet Theatre production of Jessica Dickey’s “The Amish Project” October 4 and 5, at the Bok Gallery on Rte 343 in Sharon. The play is inspired by the 2006 hostage taking and killing at an Amish school in Pennsylvania. Doors open at 7 PM for wine and refreshments; the reading begins at 7:30 PM For tickets, call 860-435-6928.
  • Plan to share in the fun of a hometown celebration and welcome visitors to the beautiful Northwest Corner on Columbus Day weekend, October 11, 12, & 13, for Salisbury’s Annual Fall Festival. Throughout the weekend, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Feast on freshly-made blueberry pancakes at St. Johns. Find attic treasures, global crafts, home-made baked goods, previously-loved books, jewelry, and clothing at the churches and library on Main Street. Visit the Historical Society’s photo show “Salisbury’s Natural Resources.” For lunch, stop by the hot dog tent. There’s fun for the children on Saturday, with magic shows, hay rides, games, face painting. Check Lakeville Journal for more details.
  • On Sunday, October 6, Hotchkiss School will host the third annual HYSB Hotchkiss Bearcat 5K on the Campus of The Hotchkiss School, with 5K Cross Country Run, Kids Fun-Run, 1K Youth Run. Visit HYSB.org for info and to register. Net proceeds will benefit the programs and services of the Housatonic Youth Service Bureau.
  • Scoville Memorial Library and Oblong Books present author Sarah Kilborne, American Phoenix: The remarkable Story of William Skinner, A Man Who Turned Disaster Into Destiny, October 5 at 2 PM. In 1845, penniless William Skinner sailed in steerage from the slums of London to the U.S. He opened his own factory and was lauded a pioneer in the textile industry. In 1874, a dam burst several miles north of the village he had built, destroying everything in its path, the worst industrial disaster the nation had yet known. Skinner’s great, great granddaughter, Sarah, tells an inspiring, unforgettable American story.
  • Beer tasting returns as the Salisbury Winter Sports Association (SWSA) hosts the fourth annual Brew Ski Fest on Sunday, October 13, from 1 to 4 PM at Satre Hill during Fall Festival weekend. Tickets for Brew Ski Fest cost $30 per person in advance. Tickes will cost $35 the day of the event. For information, go to www.jumpfest.org.
