Memorial Day 2018

May 25th, 2018

This weekend pride with permeate our villages as we parade colors of red (hardiness), white (purity), and blue (vigilance, perseverance, justice) to signify the core values that have upheld our country since 1776.

Originally called “Decoration Day”, Memorial Day didn’t become an official American holiday until 1971. It is celebrated on the last Monday of May. In addition to being an opportunity to honor the men and women who have given their lives to protect our country, it is also the unofficial beginning of summer. In the Tri-State Region, people will gather for parades, ceremonies, barbeques, and explore the lakes and mountains – kicking off the pending season of outdoor recreation.
As you spend this Memorial Day with friends, family and community in celebration of the summer season and the beautiful place in which we live, enjoy the moment with a strong appreciation of the past – a fearless nation of men and women whose work was their legacy.

Salisbury’s very own marching band, in existence since 1928, and the Salisbury Central School band will lead the parade leaving from the Scoville Library at 10:00 AM and culminating in a service at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Other area towns also host parades, services, and more. The parade in Millerton, New York is scheduled for a 10:00 AM departure as well and will leave from Veteran’s Park. You can also stop by the Land Trust Picnic in Kent or compete in the Fortieth Five K Run in Norfolk. Kick off summer by joining us for the holiday weekend and honoring American service members. There’s always plenty to do in the beautiful Tri-State Area.
